DIY or DI Don’t?

Good morning and happy Monday!

I am very excited about today’s post, as I’ve had the chance to interview a very talented designer (and friend!) Karey Majka of Rustic Rabbit Interiors. Karey has such a unique talent for design, in combining new, fresh trends with vintage pieces and executing everything flawlessly. We have now done several projects together in her home. There is quite a buzz going around about DIYing things in your own home, which for the record, I am not totally against. But it begs the question: are there certain items you should leave up to the professionals? Seeing as Karey is multi talented, I figured she was the perfect person to pose this question to! Enjoy our conversation below and then tell me, which items do you DIY and which do you DI Don’t in your home?

Tell me about your business (what do you do, specialize in, etc) and how did you get started

I am an Interior Designer who specializes in room refreshes that consists of color/material consultations, furniture configuration, sourcing and styling. Rustic Rabbit Interiors has been part of my life for over 5 years now. I have education in art history, interior design, and I am working on my master's in higher education administration. I absolutely love to help clients create comfortable spaces in their homes that also function well and look amazing!

Why did you choose to work with Riveted in your own home instead of tackling the project yourself?

Working with Althea has been wonderful! She has a true talent in woodworking and she just "gets" me! I usually come up with a design for the space and then we collaborate on materials and finishing details. She has all the necessary tools, software, and knowledge to bring my designs to life!

What was your favorite part of the process?

I love seeing the design come to life and transform a space to a highly functioning (and pretty) area! We all love a good Before & After, right?

What was unexpected that made you say "I'm glad I didn't do this myself!"?

We all are pretty familiar with supply chain shortages, even those outside of the trades. Riveted was able to manage this part and communicate expected timing of delivery and installation. It saved me the stress of needing to coordinate that on my own.

Anything else you would tell potential clients who are weighing the pros and cons of attempting a big DIY project such as built ins?

I highly recommend using a professional woodworker to complete large jobs like built-ins. They can save you a lot of time and hassle. Riveted uses high quality solid wood materials and can predict potential issues and solve them before they even happen. Well worth the investment!

Do you feel you achieved your vision for your space?

100% satisfied! I am already dreaming up new plans for clients as well as my own home!

One of my favorite parts about what we do here at Riveted is not only the amazing connections I’ve made with both clients and other small businesses, but the community and knowledge that is shared. I am a forever student in this business, so I love hearing different perspectives. Karey makes a good point using the word investment - what I think is hard to distinguish on social media is the quality of the products in your home. The built ins we create are made from solid, quality products, expertly installed and meant to last a lifetime! We have a lot of information about not only the process, but the quality of our products here on our website and in our FAQs page. And as always, feel free to reach out with any questions about our work! Lastly, here is a bit more about Karey, her work and beautiful home and how to contact her to work with her below!
